Tools are various items the player can get to obtain materials and resources they cannot pick up such as roots, fish, and ore. Most tools are crafted by bears once the player has given them the items needed to make them.
Most tools do not have to be held in hand in order to be used, but they have to be in the player's backpack.
Durability[]
Most tools can only be used a limited number of times before it breaks. That number is represented by a tool's durability value; the more advanced the tool is, the more durable it is.
Each time a tool is used, its durability value is reduced. The number of durability points spent per use depends on a tool and the level of the object the tool is used on. The natural objects on the island come in three levels: basic, pro, or master; most of these objects look different based on their level (with the exception of spirit wells).
Spirit wells of different levels are not visually different; however, only one spirit well of each level spawns on the island every game day for a total of three. If the player finds and harvests all spirit wells in a given day, the durability of their dowsing rod will be reduced by ten points. (Note that it is only possible to find all three spirit wells with a master dowsing rod.)
Tool | Objects harvested | Durability points spent | ||
---|---|---|---|---|
Basic | Pro | Master | ||
Shovel | Dirt mounds | 1 | 3 | 6 |
Pickaxe | Rocks | 1 | 3 | 6 |
Machete | Shrubberies | 1 | 3 | 6 |
Dowsing rod | Spirit wells | 1 | 3 | 6 |
The tool breaks when its durability reaches zero. Broken tools cannot be used until they are repaired by Jeremy Gruffle. The repair cost varies depending on the tool and its level.
Each time a tool breaks, it releases some spirit imp essence. The amount of essence obtained from breaking a tool depends on its level.

The fishing rod and the critter net have infinite durability and will never break. The durability of the spirit camera depletes by one each time it is used, even if the player immediately deletes the photo they have taken. The accordion's durability also depletes by one each time it is used, but only if there are harvestable fruit trees, bushes, or flower plants in its area of effect.
Crafted tools[]
Shovel[]
Shovels are used to dig things up from dirt mounds, such as roots, nuts, onions and old coins. The wooden shovel is the first tool obtained in the game.
Shovels do not have to be held in hand to be used, but they have to be in the player's backpack and not in storage.
Upgrading the shovel increases its durability and allows the player to dig more types of dirt mounds to receive better rewards.
The shovel's durability is reduced by one when the player digs out a basic dirt mound, by three for a pro dirt mound, and by six for a master dirt mound.

Pickaxe[]
Pickaxes are used to mine rocks for ore, coins and salt. The pickaxe is the third tool obtained in the game.
Pickaxes do not have to be held in hand to be used, but they have to be in the player's backpack and not in storage.
Upgrading the pickaxe allows the player to obtain more resources per mined rock, different types of ores, larger ores that give more ingots and mine larger rocks. More rocks can be accessed by the player over time and as the island expands.
The pickaxe's durability is reduced by one when the player mines a basic rock, by three for a pro rock, and by six for a master rock.

Machete[]
Machetes are used to chop shrubberies to obtain different types of greens and old coins. The machete is the fourth tool obtained in the game.
Machetes do not have to be held in hand to be used; however, they have to be in the player's backpack and not in storage to be used.
Upgrading the machete will allow the player to chop different types of shrubberies for mixed greens, fancy greens and deluxe greens (the latter two can also be baked by Allison Fisher).
The machete's durability is reduced by one when the player cuts a basic shrubbery, by three for a pro shrubbery, and by six for a master shrubbery.

Dowsing rod[]
Dowsing rods are used to find spirit wells and extract relics. The dowsing rod is the fifth tool obtained in the game.
When the player holds the rod in their hand, they can occasionally see a little icon on top of the rod, which lets them know whether there is a relic nearby. The dowsing rod will lead the player to the relic by playing "hot or cold", with the flame becoming bigger when the player is near, and turning into a snowflake when they're going the wrong way. When the icon looks like a big burning flame, the spot where the relic is buried will appear. The player can then use the rod above the mark to get the relic out.
The minigame symbols are as follows:
Players can upgrade the dowsing rod to use it multiple times each day and get rarer items. The wooden dowsing rod can be used once a day, the metal rod twice a day, and the master rod thrice a day.
Dowsing rods do not have to be held in hand to be used and will vibrate in the player's backpack if there are relics to find. However, the "hot or cold" minigame cannot be played unless the rod is held in hand.

Purchased tools[]
Fishing rod[]

Bought from Mr. Kit's shop for 20 after speaking to Captain Billweather Snout, the fishing rod is the second tool the player comes across in Cozy Grove.
The fishing rod has infinite durability (never breaks) and does not need to be upgraded to access new resources. The player can use this to fish for fish, essence, recipes and, on occasion, branches and shells.
Critter Net[]
The Critter Net is a tool used to catch Critters. It can be purchased from Kit's Canteen for 7,500 Old Coins.
Spirit Camera[]

The spirit camera is a tool used to take photos that can be purchased it at Kit's Canteen 7,500. Once purchased, the spirit camera can be placed in the active slot of the player's backpack to take photos with the throw button. Once a photo is taken, the player is given an option to save or delete it. Saved photos can be viewed by using the spirit camera in the inventory.
The camera can be used 24 times before its durability is depleted. When this happens, it can be repaired at Jeremy Gruffle's with camera film . Camera film can be purchased from Mr. Kit for 4,000 or from Arjun Bhalla for 2,400
, but it won't appear in the shop unless the camera's durability is currently completely depleted.
Accordion[]
The Accordion is a tool used to harvest multiple Fruit and Nut trees, berry bushes, and both potted and bush flower plants at the same time. The accordion can be purchased at Kit's Canteen for 175,000 once the player reaches Scout Rank 12 (unlocks Bruin Tram).
Tool Finder[]
If the player has trouble locating their tools, they can use a Tool finder located to the west of Jeremy Gruffle's area. Tool finder looks like a satellite dish that can be interacted with; after interacting with it, the player can choose to view the full list of their tools and their locations.
