Scoutmaster Blake is a unique non-playing character in that he does not reside on Cozy Grove Island. The player's only contact with him is by letter. Scoutmaster Blake sends letters regularly when the player first arrives on the island, but they become more sporadic over time.
Each letter from Scoutmaster Blake has a common decoration attached to it.
Hope you're settling into your Solo Camping Adventure! Don't be disheartened if you can't find a needy ghost immediately. I intentionally picked a safe island that's not too haunted. When you finally find a ghost, try to help it make peace with itself, and when you do you'll finally graduate to Second Degree!
- Scoutmaster Blake
PS: I'll try to write you every day! Unless I get busy.
Letter No. 2[]
Cheerio, Scouty-Wooty!
Received Day 2
I'm surprised I haven't heard back, is everything okay? You've got your flame guide, right? Your aunts told me old 'Flamey' has been in your family since before the last big Purge. Keep feeding Flamey, and they'll help you locate all the restless souls lost in the dark corners of that island.
- Scoutmaster Blake
Letter No. 3[]
Cheerio, Scout-a-Mundo!
Received Day 3
Fun fact! I was looking up the history of the island you are on. Turns out that you were supposed to go to Cozy COVE. Spirit Scouts have been doing solo trips there for generations -- it's only mildly haunted.
I don't have much information about Cozy GROVE, so I sent off a request to the main chapter. Maybe they'll know more?
- Scoutmaster Blake
Letter No. 4[]
Cheerio, Scout-a-Loo!
Received Day 4
I'm not the sort to become alarmed, but we found bits of a little boat wrecked on the shore. It looked a lot like your boat? Ha ha! Adventure! Am I right?
Don't worry, if you are lost for too long, we'll come out to get you. Almost certainly.
- Scoutmaster Blake
Letter No. 5[]
Cheerio, Scout-About-Town!
Received Day 5
No word from the main chapter yet, but I found an old story about Cozy Grove at the library. There used to be a town there! But it died out decades ago. So there may be dozens of ghosts on the island! If you help them all, you'll shoot straight past Second Degree and graduate into the Inner Circle of the Spirit Scouts! Very few people ever accomplish that. I'm sure you'll look back on this as a huge opportunity and honor someday! If you survive. Which I'm sure you will! One hundred percent sure. Yep Yep!
- Scoutmaster Blake
Letter No. 6[]
Cheerio, Scout-Astic!
Received Day 6
Good news! Your parents gave permission to extend your trip a bit longer. I took the liberty of letting them know you'll be late.
You know, since I haven't heard from you. And I'm sure you don't want them to worry. Ha, people can get so upset when their children don't come home! Ha ha ha.
- Scoutmaster Blake
PS. Still no word from the main chapter. Strange.
Letter No. 7[]
Cheerio, Scout-a-Roonie!
Received Day 7
I've been teaching the rest of the troop all about ghost animals. Mostly you see wisp birds around these parts, but sometimes a ghost deer will show up.
Did you know they are attracted to positive energy? So keep those good deeds coming and you may be lucky enough to see one!
- Scoutmaster Blake
PS. I got a really weird message from the folks at the main chapter. 'Oh god. Not Cozy Grove.'
Letter No. 8[]
Cheerio, Scout-About!
Received Day 8
Some bad news. Melissa, who said she'd be treasurer, is moving cross-state. So dues collection got delayed. And THEN Mr. Allen (he's my cousin) was telling me how tourists have been driving up boat rental prices thereabouts.
Don't give up hope! Optimistically we should be able to get out there maybe next spring?
Anyway, I'm sure you are thriving. Ah, youth. Such hearty vigor in times of trial!
- Scoutmaster Blake
Letter No. 9[]
Cheerio, Scout-Tooky!
Received Day 9
Bit of a gray day in these parts. Had a moment of doubt... what if you never come back? Every time I lose a scout, it weighs on me.
But then I remember the importance of persistence! The one trait shared by all successful people. Heck, just look at me -- I've persisted through the loss of several scouts.
You're a good egg. Studious. Empathetic. Excellent camping skills.
I know you can do this!
Believing in you,
- Scoutmaster Blake
Letter No. 10[]
Cheerio, Scout-Acular!
Received Day 10
I just realized that we didn't cover imps in your orientation, did we? Ha ha!
I didn't think you'd be running into any malevolent creatures of despair and woe quite so soon.
Why, I remember when I went to the national jamboree back in '04... angry imps stole half the camp's underwear. Good times! They went away when Old Sue tossed the big horned imp a turnip.
Keep those spirits up!
- Scoutmaster Blake
PS: Never got my underwear back. :-(
Letter No. 11[]
Cheerio, Scout-Skip-Skool!
Received Day 11
Guess what?! I finally had a terse call with a Ms. Matsdotter from the head office. She dug up a list of reports about Cozy Grove. And it isn't all bad! Sure, some folks died there, but listen to this:
'NO REPORTS of demonic possession or tentacle beasts.
Pretty great! Anyway, she has an old friend from her coven days who works in the Spirit Scout National Archives. She'll see if they can find anything else.
Stay spooky!
- Scoutmaster Blake
Letter No. 12[]
Cheerio, Super-Scout!
Received Day 12
I'm still speaking regularly with your parents. They agree the waiver you signed means they can't sue. Hurrah!
I told them I'm sure you are learning so much.
Good times!
- Scoutmaster Blake
Letter No. 13[]
Cheerio, Duper-Scout!
Received Day 13
Some ugly storms have been brewing out at sea. No one is willing to make the crossing to Cozy Grove.
Mr. Allen (he lives by the docks) said when lightning cracks, you can spot some huge mournful beast rising out of the ocean depths. I quote, 'The color of the moon. Eyes of cold flame.'
But wow! This means you get a whole island all to yourself. You are SO LUCKY!
Stay warm!
- Scoutmaster Blake
Letter No. 14[]
Cheerio, Gooper-Scout!
Received Day 14
When you get back, you should meet Mr. Allen. I was going to have him do a workshop on fish people. He had a nasty run-in a few years back... his stories are just insane.
Ooh, maybe we can make an Elder God merit badge... wouldn't that be fun?
- Scoutmaster Blake
Letter No. 15[]
Cheerio, Scout-a-Looooga!
Received Day 15
The chickadees are in fine form this morning! Also, I got another update from Ms. Matsdotter for you.
Sounds like there was a ferry accident a few decades back? Some captain, deep in his cups, smashed right onto the rocks? No survivors, children lost... ruled 'extreme negligence.'
I bet the beach there has some wonderful ghosts!
Lucky, lucky you.
- Scoutmaster Blake
Letter No. 16[]
Cheerio, Scout-a-Doubt!
Received Day 17
At breakfast Catherine (she's my snook'ems... you know her as Mrs. Blake) was inquiring about you. Are you well fed? Are you warm?
It was a great opportunity to tell her about the robust quality of scouting merchandise! Our wool hats keep off the cold. The thick weave allows for energetic wilderness shenanigans!
She smiled and told me, 'One reason I love you is that you never give up hope.'
See that? When I told you earlier about persistence, I knew what I was talking about!
- Scoutmaster Blake
Letter No. 17[]
Cheerio, Scout-a-Doubt!
Received Day 19
Apologies if my letters are a touch sporadic. I'm prepping for the new Scouting season and my garage is a mess.
Usually we store gear in the Scout Hall, but ever since the Endangerment Decree, sneaking in has a been a bit touch-and-go.
- Scoutmaster Blake
Letter No. 18[]
Cheerio, Lova-Lova-Scout
Received Day 21
Have you ever seen a heart-broken imp? They usually come in pairs.
If you throw a chocolate treat nearby, you lure one imp over to the other.
(I did something similar when wooing Catherine!)
- Scoutmaster Blake
Letter No. 19[]
Cheerio, Scout-a-Wonga!
Received Day 24
Just between you and me, I don't think Ms. Matsdotter likes me. Last time we discussed your vacation in Cozy Grove, she was yelling in her Swedish accent something about a dead king and cursed ruins.
Probably nothing to worry about.
Send my regards to the local poltergeists,
- Scoutmaster Blake
Letter No. 20[]
Cheerio, Scout-Oglia!
Received Day 27
As Catherine and I ate our cereal this morning, I was reflecting on your progress. When you joined, you were just a junior Spirit Scout. No fire level. No kind deeds performed.
But everyone grows up, eh? And that is what this camping trip is about. Learning about the bigger world. Learning who you are.
I'm so proud of you! Whether or not you're still alive.
- Scoutmaster Blake
Letter No. 21[]
Cheerio, Scout-La-Lost-It!
Received Day 31
In all my years running this chapter of Spirit Scouting, I've only had four scouts that went missing.
Most days at 5am, I get up and try to write each a short note.
One for Bronnie when the mist rose up from the lake.
One for little Stibbles after the crypt was sealed.
One for Mary Ann who was always the slowest.
Thinking of you,
- Scoutmaster Blake
Letter No. 22[]
Cheerio, Ta-Dah-Scout!
Received Day 37
There's a new batch of junior scouts starting today. They still have their normal eyes! They looked a bit nervous when I told them about our all-consuming fire spirits. Ha ha! We'll have them spotting specters in no time. And the rituals. The rituals!!
But, you know... what I'm looking forward to most is teaching them kindness and forgiveness.
- Scoutmaster Blake
Letter No. 23[]
Cheerio, Boo-ti-ful-scout!
Received Day 43
Do you ever stop and admire the beauty in the world? Some mornings when I'm out walking our cat, I find myself stunned by it all. The glowing light though the leaves. The transcendent forest flowers. The birdsong. It overwhelms me!
Momo (that's our cat) usually brings me around with her meowing. She really doesn't like her harness. But who does?
Hope you are hopeful,
- Scoutmaster Blake
Letter No. 24[]
Cheerio, Grow-n-flow-Scout!
Received Day 49
Yesterday, I had another Parent-Scoutmaster meeting. We try to schedule these periodically to keep folks up to date. Very important. Though it has only been a couple years since the last one, they all had so many questions!
Some parents just can't see what their kids see. Not the kid's fault. Not the parent's fault. I always use my gentle voice.
Imagining all the good times you are having,
- Scoutmaster Blake
Letter No. 25[]
Cheerio, Plant-a-want-Scout!
Received Day 57
Catherine gave me some bad news the other day. There's a plant in the bedroom window we've been trying to keep alive. But the leaves keep going brown. So we trim them. And try to make sure it has enough water, but not too much. Neither of us has a green thumb, but we keep trying.
We are down to one leaf. And now that is going brown too.
Still hopeful,
- Scoutmaster Blake
Letter No. 26[]
Cheerio, Splurge-a-purge-Scout!
Received Day 65
We don't really teach kids much about the Purge these days. It was cut from the curriculum by adults who cared a bit too much.
Still, if you go to the Archives and dig up one of original Scouting Manuals, there are some wonderful old stories. The Cult of Loneliness! Whole nations fearing that showing kindness would make them appear weak. Sounds silly, doesn't it? I barely believe it myself.
What an impossible, improbable world!
- Scoutmaster Blake
Letter No. 27[]
Cheerio, Fat-a-Cat-Scout!
Received Day 73
Momo (my cat!) is angry with me. I'm not sure why. I wish we could talk with animals. But mostly we just feed them and marvel at their inconsistencies. But somehow that is enough? There's a joy in caretaking, even if it is completely and utterly unacknowledged.
Hope you are being kind,
- Scoutmaster Blake
Letter No. 28[]
Cheerio, Scoutio-ga-ga!
Received Day 81
There was a thing called Radio in the olden days. They'd only discovered part of the electro-etheric spectrum back then. They'd bounce signals off the slumbering atmosphere and send messages the world over.
My grandmother told me stories of the time when early scouts awoke a storm lich. The feedback blew out half the receivers in North America! Pretty much the end of Radio.
Not much of a loss, really. It made the world too small.
- Scoutmaster Blake
Letter No. 29[]
Cheerio, Aye-Scout-Eye!
Received Day 89
There was a time when Spirit Scouts weren't as beloved as they are now. The Pupilist Movement... nasty stuff! But when enough of us finally started to see beyond the mundane, surface-level appearances and the disharmony related to them just sort of... went away.
Do we listen to and support each other? Do we value and experience kindness in our lives? A little empathy glows with the most beautiful light.
- Scoutmaster Blake
Letter No. 30[]
Cheerio, Vibing-Scout!
Received Day 97
Sometimes after all the kids have left, Catherine and I put on the tunes and boogie. You probably didn't want to hear that. But it is true! Even old people need to let off steam.
Don't forget to dance!
- Scoutmaster Blake
Letter No. 31[]
Cheerio, Billy-Scout!
Received Day 105
Did you know I used to do etchings? These most vivid visions would appear in my dreams. Phantasmagorical tales rife with impossible meaning. Each morning, I'd lay them down in varnish on copper plates, and bind the resulting prints (mostly for garage sales!)
I felt that if I kept it all to myself, I would burst. Express yourself, I say! Let that spark inside of you out into the world!
- Scoutmaster Blake
Letter No. 32[]
Cheerio, Slow-Scout!
Received Day 113
Fabulous news! A lost scout, little Marie Ann, has returned! Turns out she befriended a colony of vampire sloths trapped over in Cozy Vale. By braiding moth antennae each full moon, they finally crafted enough rope to climb out. That's our Knotwork Merit badge at work!
Two years is not that long is it? Not in the grand tapestry of bountiful living... good on her!
- Scoutmaster Blake
Letter No. 33[]
Cheerio, Love-dovey-Scout!
Received Day 121
I forgot to tell you! *Marie Ann* did not return alone. An undead lass named Effrith Pug had made her home alongside Marie Ann amidst the rocks and bloodless lichen. With enough time and space, a certain romance blossomed!
You know, parents sometimes ask me if love is 'okay' when a pairing is 'too different.' Or too similar. First, it is never my place to judge. Second, I will always support those who choose to love one another. The world needs more love, not less.
- Scoutmaster Blake
Letter No. 34[]
Cheerio, Days-go-by-Scout!
Received Day 129
Thankfully, not every scout 'succeeds' at reaching the innermost circle. Most do not. But spirit scouting was never intended to be some rigid --dare I say militaristic-- conquest of merit badges and levels. Perhaps a cliche, but it is about the journey. Full of dead-ends, meditative lulls and curious accidents.
To seek constant victory is a type of internal dullness. See beyond society's clearly laid path. Remember to stumble off into the brambles! What will you discover, and who will you become?
- Scoutmaster Blake
Letter No. 35[]
Cheerio, Hug-Scout!
Received Day 137
Do you recall asking me when spirit scouting would teach you magic? I couldn't help but smile. As you've no doubt fully absorbed by now, there is no magic in this world. Just people, places and things that are complicated and interesting enough that we accidentally mistake them for the supernatural.
Have you hugged someone lately? That is the very first 'spell' every spirit scout learns.
- Scoutmaster Blake
Letter No. 36[]
Cheerio, Cha-cha-Scout!
Received Day 145
I made some tea. Not that new fangled bubble-tea kids keep going on about. Why, that's just sugar powder and newt eyeballs. No, I made the good stuff. Mountain boolong, ghost-bug-bitten for sweetness.
Took me forever to find it. And then to get the water to just the right temperature. And then to brew it. But anticipation and ritual are at least 90% of pleasure. So, so good! And I've got at least 7 steepings left.
I suspect I'll get a lot of writing done tonight,
- Scoutmaster Blake
Letter No. 37[]
Cheerio, One-post-Scout!
Received Day 153
You may be wondering 'Why so many single fenceposts?' We usually wait until leadership training to divulge the secret, but considering the length and severity of your independent study...
A single log is placed upright in the woods to guide a lost scout home. A signpost. A memorial. As much for us as it is for them.
- Scoutmaster Blake
Post-end game letters[]
Spoiler Alert
This article or section contains spoilers. Proceed with caution!
Once the player completes Captain Billweather Snout's last story quest, they will be able to leave the island to see the ending cutscene and the credit roll. After they return, they will receive four special letters from Scoutmaster Blake.
Letter No. 1[]
Cheerio, Sailor-Scout!
When I got the post from Mr. Allen that you had pulled up to the town dock in your very own meticulously-handcrafted sailboat... why I just about spilled my tea. WELCOME BACK, SPIRIT SCOUT!
Oh. My. Goodness! You'll have to do a presentation! Oh, should I tell your parents? See, there really was no need for that lawsuit! Ha ha! Maybe we'll even get our Scout Hall back.
I knew you had it in you.
- Scoutmaster Blake
Letter No. 2[]
Cheerio, Imaginary-Scout!
Your parents were delighted to see you! Living and breathing! They seemed a little perturbed that you'd want to go back out so soon. But I think they got over it. By the end of our little chat, they were cracking wonderfully funny jokes about mind control and doppleganger spells.
Parents need to let their children go. One of those eternal truths that seems to surprise each and every generation. Like taxes!
What a cheerful morning,
- Scoutmaster Blake
Letter No. 3[]
Cheerio, Luckily-duckily-Scout!
Ms. Matsdotter seemed surprised you'd returned to us. Some in the Inner Circle have spent centuries searching for the seat of the old empire! Apparently there was a curse? And some sort of disfiguring madness? Anyway, you certainly came out of it fine.
Ms. Matsdotter kept muttering 'Rumpoxe' to herself, which I assume is how you say congratulations in Swedish?
Feeling quite optimistic today,
- Scoutmaster Blake
Letter No. 4[]
Cheerio, End-o-send-Scout!
I'm still marvelling over the stories that you told me. Seventeen ghost bears, eh? That's probably a record! There was clever Margie Blemsmunk who fell down that ceremonial burial shaft. When we retrieved her diary, it claimed she'd met over 50 deceased nobles in her life. But with the fumes down there, who really knows?
Glad to have seen your smiling face again. You glow with the joy of helping others.
- Scoutmaster Blake
