Time For Bird Facts
Dear scout, Aren't you excited to start learning? The moment I discovered you couldn't unsubscribe, I knew I had to write to you... Did you know that city pigeons are feral, not wild? They're all descendants of domestic pigeons! They're everwhere people are because people took them everywhere. They used to be just that important! Yours featherly, Pete Week 1/9 |

Superb Fairy-Wrens vs Cryptanalysts!

Is there a difference between them? Well, yes. Size, for one thing. And the feathers. And beak. But in one specific way, they're the same. Oh wait, I should start this properly... Dear scout, Superb fairy-wrens teach their young a code song while thebaby bird is still an embryo in the egg! This way, the parents can recognize if one of their babies is actually a brood parasite and not a fairy-wren at all. No pass-song, no food. That's a literal "sing for your supper"! The fairy-wrens truly are suberb. Yours tunefully, Pete Week 2/9 |

The Pigeon, the Cow of the Sky!

Dear scout, Do not be fooled by the pigeon's graceful flight, or its speed -- that can outmatch a falcon (except in dives, I am forced to admit), or its lack of hooves. The common pigeon has much in common with your average cow: they both make milk. Pigeons create "milk" in their crop and regurgitate it to feed their young. Crop milk contains antibodies, anti-oxidants, and, immune-boosting elements. I would not, however, recommend you drink it. Its textural description should deter you. I will spare you it. Yours, in admiration of pigeons, Pete Week 3/9 |

Don't Bang Your Head on a Wall...

Time For Bird Facts
Dear scout, I received some letters indicating that not everyone shares my fascination with beings of the air. Since I did not hear from you, I am overjoyed to continue our correspondence. Medical advice recommends not hitting your head against hard surfaces where possible. This is because you are (probably) not a woodpecker. A woodpecker's tongue is so long that it wraps around its brain. This helps protect the bird's brain from concussion -- vital, given it experiences around 1200 Gs of force when it drums a tree. Menawhile, you um us humans have to be careful even in moshpits. With regards for the content of your skull, Pete Week 4/9 |

Bird-brained? You wish!

Time For Bird Facts
Dear scout, As one familiar with the dead, perhaps you are already friends with the crow, a bird often associated with the macabre. They are certainly not a bird to insult -- clever enough to recognize human faces, and able to pass down grudges to their children; they'll remember a harm for years. Factor in that crows can craft and use tools, and perhaps there's a reason a group of them is called a "murder". Befriend the birds or never sleep safely again. Yours in nothing but awe and respect (for the crow), Pete Week 5/9 |

Hot and bothered? Not zebra finches!

Time For Bird Facts
Dear scout, Some say that the zebra finch's song sounds like an eccentric squeaky toy... Well, it's certainly not the soft beauty of a good coo. But the finch's song can have an almost magical effect. When it gets hot out, a zebra finch sings a particular tune to their eggs. The chicks inside grow more slowly and hatch better adapted to the heat. Got to admit, on the hottest of days, I can be jealous. Yours, watching the thermometer, Pete Week 6/9 |
