Critter (Cozy Grove)

Critters are small creatures the player can catch on the island with the critter net. The critters available depend on the season the player is currently in.

Critters can be donated to Captain Snout's Collection or sold to any shop.

Types

Rarity

Like many other items in the game, critters come in five rarities: common, uncommon, rare, legendary, and mythical. Common critters are red, uncommon are green, rare are purple, legendary are gold, and mythical are sky blue.

The rarer the critter is, the more money it sells for and the more valuable reward is given for donating it to the collection. Sell prices vary depending on a critter's species, however the donation rewards are the same for all critters of the same rarity.

Species and behavior

The critters are divided into three broad groups: ground, scuttle, and flying.

Ground critters include slugs, grubs, and caterpillars. Ground critters are slow moving and pay little attention to the player, so they can be approached and caught easily.

Scuttle critters are beetles, hard shell bugs, and plant bugs. Scuttle critters move with moderate to high speed. If they notice the player approaching, they will freeze for a brief moment and scuttle across the screen away from the player. Scuttle critters can be caught during the brief moment they have noticed the player before running away.

Flying critters include flies, dragonflies, stingers, and butterflies. Out of the three, stingers are the most aggressive and will follow the player once they notice them. Dragonflies are very fast and freeze after noticing the player similarly to scuttle critters. Flies are the slowest of the three and move in circles. Butterflies are exclusive to New Neighbears DLC and only spawn around potted flowers and flower bushes placed by the player.

The rarer the critter is, the faster it moves and the less it waits for the player to catch it. Legendary and mythical critters allow the player only a few attempts at catching them and disappear shortly after noticing the player.

Season

The critters are seasonal and only spawn during their respective seasons. Each season has 45 critters.

• Winter critters appear from December to March
• Spring critters appear from March to June
• Summer critters appear from June to September
• Fall critters appear from September to December

Seasons can overlap: for example, in June the players can find both spring and summer critters.

DLC critters

New Neighbears introduced a new DLC-exclusive type of critter: butterflies. Butterflies can be caught during spring and summer and only spawn around potted flower plants and flowering bushes placed on the island by the player.

Festival critters

Nine critter species can only be caught during fall festival event after the player uses a Spooky Critter Scroll crafted by Ms. Carouse to spawn them on the island. These critters come in only one rarity and behave like normal critters. Once caught, they can be donated to the collection in exchange for quartz gemstones, used to craft jack-o'-lanterns, or sold to any shop.
